Archives #1 October 30th Nomad World Pub

The Show:
A Paper Cup Band
Strange Friends
Running Scared

Fun Show. The last of the Strange Friends Mini Series. A Paper Cup Band is really great. Groovy and great songs. The Strange Friends have been a staple of my life as long as I can remember. I love their songs. The Running Scared is a new band featuring myself, Damien Tank, and Mike McCabe from the Fillmores. We sound pretty different. I like it. Rusty Detty from the Skinnys on vocals, and new comer Gloria Iacono on guitar.

Tuesday November 18th Big V's

I need some new gloves. All I could find at Savers was a nice fur hat. I own a pile of hats, but this one was special. Had to buy it. So warm.

The Show:
Big V's Big Music Trivia
featuring The Soft Rocks

Ron Rudlong, my partner in Mouth Babies, does a great Trivia night that no one ever goes to. This night we actually had enough contestants to do three rounds of Trivia. The questions are great, the prizes even better. The Soft Rocks are AWESOME. Check them out.

Monday November 17th Big V's

I hate my cell phone.

The Show:
Mouth Babies
....can't remember
Hans Condor(Nashville, TN)
Poosa

Hans Condor fucking rules. Nice guys, great music. I mixed them about a month ago, and I was so glad to see them come back through town. They play this thursday at Stasiu's in NE. i am going to try to make it.

Sunday November 16th Dinkytowner Cafe

Its my brother Michael's 17th birthday today. I can't believe he is that old now.

The Show:
Big Time Entertainment presents....

Too Many Hip Hop sets unbelievable. These shows are more of a head ache than anything. I keep doing them because A. I need the money B. I get a shift meal. By the way, to any local artists: Don't do anything by a "promotions company". EVER. Especially, if they contact you on myspace. No real booker books thru that.

Saturday November 15th Dinkytowner Cafe

The Show:
Hip Hop
Wet Dragons
Ray Banderez
Kritical Kontact
and more...

Long night mixing tons of short hip hop sets. My friends The Wet Dragons are the rudest and silliest hip hop crew in Minnesota. Oh yes.

Friday November 14th Nomad World Pub

The Show:
10w40
Dallas Orbiter
Planet 9

The Nomad hosted a ton of gear. These bands rolled into the club with more gear than 8 bands. Sounded good(because I mixed it).  Thats all I remember.

November 13th Nomad World Pub

I drank a ton of coffee at May Day Cafe by my house and spent the day on the internet.

The Show:

Military Special
Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles
Bouncer Fighter
Sarah Johnson

Lucy Michelle is doing what we can at the Nomad, the Miniseries. That means one headliner band plays every Thursday in a month. They book the supporting bands. Its a lot of fun. This month is Lucy Michelle. Sarah Johnson is a loud noise rock band, not usually my thing but these guys rule. Bouncer Fighter is great, Anti-Civ kids. They are epic and beautiful. Lucy is the Best. Ever. I love mixing their band. Its a lot to deal with on such a small stage. Drum, Upright bass, Cello, Accordian/violin/bells, Uke, Keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guiar, 3 vocals. Some sound guys hate bands like that. But I like em. Holy Cap, I was blown away by Military Special. Good dance music. Fun Night, I wish they all could be like this.

Tuesday November 11th Big V's

The Show:

Smells like Burning
20 Dollar love is a great band, good guys. Smells like Burning played their last show tonight.  I'm ok with that. The Giraffes on tour from New York, blew my mind. Holy Shit. Their singer was sick as a dog, he told every one to think of his voice as Tom Waits with a Crack problem. They were fantastic. Check em out.

Monday November 10th-John Brown's Bday!!!

Brown turns 30!!!

Sunday November 9th Dinkytowner Cafe

Jam Solid Presents....

Nobody's Shit Works Day.

Struggles abound this shift. All I have to say is. If your band is playing the Dinkytowner Cafe, EVER, leave your wireless guitar rig at home. Especially, if you can't fucking get it to work after 20 minutes of set up. Get it together metal guys. Come on.

Saturday November 8th Nomad World Pub

I feel a lot better. Cold lazy day at home.

The Show:

The Alrights(Duluth)
Kerns and the Hemispheres
Teramarra

These are all great bands. Kerns rips guitar. The Alrights, being from out of town, get hosed by playing the last set. They are more than Alright. They rule. After the show, Jade and I head down to the Sound Gallery for the Clapper Claw festival. Upon arrival we learn they had ran out of booze. I would like to check out this Clapper Claw next year. But they better stock the fuck up.

Friday November 7th Nomad World Pub

I think I am getting a cold.

The Show:

Nikki and the Rue Mates
John Wills
Spider John Koerner

Everybody that played tonight was amazing. Too mellow. I got real sleepy by the end of the night.
I was really impressed by everyone.

Thursday November 6th Nomad World Pub

So I have four fave local bands right now(that I'm not in)

The Show:

Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles

Bitch and Brown got to open for Lucy Michelle and the VLs tonight. The Poor Nobodys were incredible. We had Tyler back on drums, so we were extra rowdy. Much to the dismay of the audience. We were the odd band out for sure. Lucy and the crew were amazing as usual.

November 5th Dinkytowner Cafe

So, I work a show every first Wednesday of every month at the Dinkytowner called Switch. A local underground Hip Hop showcase. The organizers are AWESOME. They are the most prompt Hip Hop crew in Minnesota. It s always an interesting show.

The Show:
Too many to name all of them. But I can name a few MC's from the night.
Spy
Sean Anonymous
Shell Toe
Ezra
Dalia
Deathray Scientific

This is a particularly brutal sound shift. They pack the bill with 10-11 set. I love working with these guys, but it turns into a long night.

Tuesday November 4th Nomad World Pub/Big V's

The Day started out fun. Went and voted with my friend Shelly.  Then went to Humans Win Studio to start our training. Tyler and I are going to start tracking the Brown Moses debut record. Later on I found myself at the Nomad for the Election Coverage and free Schell's. The energy their was AMAZING. So excited. Jade, Hope, and Bridget were down there. I had to leave to bike my ass to St. Paul. Big V's had no energy. Sad. 3rd Rock from the Sun was on TV, WTF?

The Show:
Little Irvy
Best Bitch in Show

Best Bitch in Show features Bernie the Trailer Park Queen on vocals. Also, Brian Herb on drums. She was giing out stickers that said I Bitched in place of I Voted. Little Iry was not my thing. the Hostages were got energetic punk rock. After the show Herb, Ron, and went to the Turf to Kristy Hunt play bass with the VonBondies. All we saw was a jam with them and First Communion Afterparty. Later on Herb and I eat fish sticks and fall asleep to Freaks and Geeks.

Monday November 3rd Big V's

I've been doing Big V's for over 2 years now, it's a punk rock dive. But It's OUR punk rock dive. I've had some great shows there. I love it, I hate it. I drank beer at work this night. I don't usually drink when I work but I think I was anxious about the election. Cause I got drunk.

The Show:

Lambs of God were a 2 piece girl group with one of the girls from Kitten Forever in it. I can't remember her name . They were fun. ipod, squeeze box, uke. The ex-Lovers were fantastic. Country folk, banjo, guitar, upright bass, drums. Captain Clawthroat are Anti-Civ Records kids. Great punk/country. This was my second time mixing Zombie Season and they have some new members and they are way improved. Pixies-ish. Mouth Babies is Ron Rudlong and myself. We are ok.

Sunday November 2nd Dinkytowner Cafe

Jam Solid Presents. I kinda hate sundays at the Dinkytowner. They used be really cool. When I first started doing sound, sundays there were a great All Ages show. Coolest bands in the cities. Now myspace trolling promotional companies have made the Dinkytowner a lack luster All Ages show. Boo-urns. Thats right. I never can remember who played at these but I will still write about em.

November 1 Nomad World Pub

So I now do the booking at the Nomad World Pub. Yup, the day after Halloween is a hard night to fill. But a really cool band from Ames, Iowa did most of the work for me this night. I didn't mix this show, but Bitch and Brown opened up the show. It was a lot of fun.

The show:
A Night in the Box
Bitch and Brown
This was a really  fun night. Our normal drummer(Tyler aka Dale Earnhardt Jr. Bootstrap) was in New York. So we had our friend George(aka Bilbo Bootstrap) fill in on drums. Things went well, Georgie is a Pro for sure. Wolves in the Attic are great midwest indie rock. Poppy, Noisy, & Loud. I hope they come back through and want to play at the Nomad. A Night in the Box is one of my all time FAVE LOCAL BANDS. They are the greatest. We've been playing shows with them for a couple of years. We always have a good time with them. If you haven't heard of them check them out. A Night in the Box

Friday Oct 31st Nomad World Pub

Halloween 2008
I decided to dress as Logan(Wolverine of the Xmen). I shave off my beard, tape Shishkabob skewers to my wrist, put on my jean jacket, and spike my hair up.
The show:
The Come-Ons
Freddy's Sweater(aka Officer Gentlemen)
USA Solid Gold Retrievers
Aaron and the Sea

This show was AWESOME!! A ton of fun. I really like Aaron and the Sea. I had never heard USA Solid Gold Retrievers, but they were GREAT party punk rock. Freddy's Sweater is a band of really talented players led by my friend Frank. He does door at the Nomad(with the mustache). The dressed as the gang from A Clock Work Orange, they pulled it off amazingly. The Come-Ons exploded on stage as the California Raisins. They were fun, but really loud. I believe I've mixed them before somewhere, i don't know. They aren't always this much. The Nomad was packed full of crazy people in crazy costumes. Too many good ones to name.

Sound Log Intro

So here it is. My log of doing live sound in the Twin Cities area. I've been doing this as my main source of income for the last 3 years. I have done sound at following place: The Dinkytowner Cafe, Lee's Liquor Lounge, Big V's Saloon, Mayslack's, The Terminal Bar, Memory Lanes, Nomad World Pub, The Turf Club, Minnesota Museum of American Art, Kitty Kat Club, Gluek's. I've seen and heard countless shows through out the country. Here is where I am going to try to catalog my memories and experiences. Thank you for reading...
